The days you remember
March 13, 2023A weekend in May, me and some friends packed our bags and headed to Hoddevik – fueled on wanderlust and with a wish to explore more of our home country. Even though I´ve seen loads of pictures and heard rumours about this gem for years, I was not prepared for the sheer magic of Hoddevik. Here are the highlights of the trip:
The journey itself
We drove from Oslo, and the road trip to Hoddevik was an experience itself. Driving past snow-capped mountains, cosy villages, shimmering fjords, turquoise rivers and cascading waterfalls, left me awe-struck. As a nature lover, I wanted to climb every mountain and swim in every lake I saw – and I will definitely go back to explore some of the places we discovered on our route.
The iconic road to Hoddevik
And finally, there it was; the iconic, windy road leading down to the bay of Hoddevik. As we drove down the road to our home for the next few days, we passed grassing sheep, rolling green hills and colourful Norwegian cottages. Add a sunset, pink sky and some good tunes, and we were in for some proper goosebumps. The next few days we spend loads of time here, skating the road and enjoying the views.
Hikes with views
With 25 degrees and sunny weather during our time in Hoddevik, we had perfect conditions for great hikes and amazing views. The hike to Mosekleivhornet was definitely a favourite, where we climbed one of the mountains framing the bay. The views were absolutely spectacular, with the mile-long white sandy beach stretching out underneath us, and the glittering turquoise water dotted with tiny surfers making it look like a Nordic Hawaii.
Golden hour surf
Surfing in Hoddevik gives you the ultimate sense of freedom. The raw nature and fresh, clean water make you feel truly alive. After paddling out, we sat on our boards and took in the view for a while, the golden hour colouring the mountainsides with various shades of orange, pink and a spell of salty haze. It was so much fun to play around in the waves, and we were the only people in the water, so for a while we had paradise all to ourselves.
Midnight BBQs
Every day we set up a base on the beach in the evening, and brought lanterns and candles to create a cosy setting. The sun doesn’t set before 11.30 pm this time of year, so we made the most of every sunbeam and moment. Watching the sun go down over the magical landscape while enjoying a barbeque and having some quality time with my friends, will stay with me for a long time. If you want to try out a midnight BBQ or surf, this is the place to do it! While we were in Hoddevik, we ended up sleeping a lot less but still feeling very energized, since it´s constantly magically light. Gotta love a Scandi summer!
Chilling at the camp
We stayed at Utsikten, which was beautifully located with views over the bay. The camp has a huge terrace and even a sauna! After swimming and surfing, we often went back to take a sauna, then made a tasty dinner which we enjoyed outside under fairly lights and pastel skies. Utsikten is super chilled, with quirky details and a cool surf vibe. The perfect base for adventurous souls and those wild at heart. If you want to check it out yourself, read more here.
