FINDING NEW MEANING THROUGH SURFING — How a professional World Cup skier started a new life at our camp in Sri Lanka

March 13, 2023

When Kristina Riis-Johannessen ended her career as a professional ski racer for the Norwegian national team, she knew that she had to find something else that could give her a sense of purpose and a new lifestyle to immerse herself in. She had won the gold medal in the 2021 World Championships Team Event and was wondering if anything could ever compete with that. But she took a leap of faith and moved to the other side of the world to join our team in Sri Lanka. It wasn’t a race anymore – it was all about the journey – and the prize was freedom. We sat down to have a chat with her about her new life.

What was it that made you interested in the Lapoint way of life?

After ending my ski career, I knew I needed something else that really fulfilled me – but also something completely different. Being a professional skier is amazing, but also very intense – you’re always training for the next race and your everyday life has a lot of routines and very little room for spontaneity. I was looking for something that made me feel truly alive. I wanted to feel free but at the same time have something I was passionate about.

So what meaning has surfing in your everyday life now?

I’ve absolutely fallen in love with surfing – for me, surfing is just everything now. I constantly find myself looking out over the ocean, thinking about the next surf session and daydreaming of the great waves I’ve caught! Moving to a new place, surfing has also given me a new lifestyle and made it easy to get to know people, which is so valuable when you’re on the other side of the world. It’s such a social and supportive sport!

How does surfing make you feel?

It gives me adrenalin and a raw sense of freedom. I also love that you’re completely immersed in nature, which forces you to be present and focus on the moment. When I’m out in the water is just me and my surfboard – no other distractions. There are very few moments like that left in today's digital world.

And how’s your surf journey been?

I’ve been dreaming about living in a tropical place for many years, and Sri Lanka had the perfect balance of being a paradise but also a place you can call home and don’t feel like a tourist. The island has a local vibe and a very authentic feel to it, which I really like. It’s also a lot to explore within short proximity – a stunning mix of remote beaches, amazing surf spots, rainforests and mountains.

Of all places in the world – why did you choose Sri Lanka?

And what about camp life – how is your new home in Ahangama?

It’s amazing to be surrounded by people who follow their hearts and passion to create the life they want to live. Who’s taking control over their own time and how they want to spend it. It’s a good mix of surfers, backpackers, staff and people who’ve fallen in love with Sri Lanka and don’t want to leave. From the very first day, I’ve felt very at home – being here is like being part of a family!

What does everyday life look like in paradise?

I usually get up at 6am to surf, as the waves are great in the morning! Then I eat breakfast in a bikini – it’s soo nice with the tropical weather and that you can be outdoors the whole time. During the day I hang out with the guest – my role as a social host is to make everyone feel at home and help organise fun activities at the camp and in the area.

Why would you recommend Lapoint to other people?

The togetherness and connection with other people who wants the same adventure as you! What’s unique about the Lapoint experience is that everyone arrives on the same day and then has a whole week together – you really get to know people and share not only surf lessons but also activities, dinners and fun nights out together! And don’t be afraid to travel solo – I did it and it was the best decision ever.
