Where and when can I surf tropical waves during winter?
Unless cold water surfing is for you during wintertime, then it might be time to start looking at surf trips for the colder months that are upon us. Depending on your surf level, there are some destinations that might suit you better during different times of the year. Here’s our guide:
Ahangama, Sri Lanka
Beginner surfers who just started their journey will enjoy Sri Lanka's mellow waves all year round! For the more advanced surfers, both level 2 and level 3, might like to surf in Sri Lanka from November to April. During the winter months, the waves are better shaped, cleaner and overall more enjoyable!
Santa Teresa, Costa Rica
Beginners and intermediates will benefit from surfing in Santa Teresa during winter time, while the advanced surfers probably won’t have any problem surfing Santa Teresa all year round. The European winter months occur during the dry season in Santa Teresa which means that the waves will be beginner-friendly and gentle.
Canggu, Bali
Bali is one of the destinations that you can count on throughout the year for surfing. The warm water and nice waves will be present no matter the season. The high season in Bali is between May and September, so if you come here during the European winter season (aka, Bali’s wet season) you can expect the lineup to consist of fewer surfers and the waves to be smaller.
El Sunzal, El Salvador
The best time for beginners to visit El Salvador for surfing is from November to May, during this time you will find some nice beginner-friendly spots with nice conditions. Levels 2 and 3 will find great waves in El Salvador throughout the year.
