5 reasons to explore Costa Rica during winter time
March 13, 20231. Unique tropical experience
Costa Rica is one of a kind when it comes to dreamy tropical-ness, with pristine nature and the distinctive feeling of Pura Vida, perfect for relaxing in the sun after a long winter in cold weather. In addition to surfing and action-packed activities like zip-lining, horse riding, volcano hiking and Quad bike adventures, check out wildlife parks like Corcovado National Park and Drake Bay to get close to monkeys, iguanas, birds and animals you won’t find any other place in the world. These areas are also home to loads of waterfalls, green hills and other lush, breathtaking sights. From our surf camp in Costa Rica, you can take day trips to the beautiful Monteuzuma waterfall, known for its many different pools!
2. Surfing
We love the Costa Rican surf in the winter, offering warm tropical water and clean waves for all levels of surfers. Our surf camp in Santa Teresa is just a short walk away from Playa Carmen in Santa Teresa, which is overflowing with great waves. A short drive north is the gorgeous Playa Hermosa, where we run most of our surf lessons in beginner-friendly waves. More experienced surfers get their thrills at regional classics around town such as La Lora and Suck Rock.
3. The weather
Temperatures of around 30 degrees, both in and out of the water, almost no rain and crystal clear water make winter the perfect time to visit Costa Rica’s Pacific side. Whether you want to stay at the surf camp and chill or go exploring – this is the time to do it. In short, Costa Rica provides all the tropical weather, fresh coconuts and golden tan lines you deserve!
4. Adventurous hiking
Known for breathtaking volcano hikes and amazing hiking trails through lush forests, Costa Rica offers great activities for adventurous souls. Head to Fortuna, Costa Rica, a small town known for being the gateway to Arenal Volcano National Park or check out the amazing Monteverde cloud forest. Winter time is perfect for exploring the country’s nature, with less mud and dryer hiking trails than the wet season.
5. The food
Tropical fruits and smoothies can be found everywhere and are definitely on the list of what to eat in Costa Rica – perfect for getting your vitamins after dark and cold days back home! In Santa Teresa, we love visiting The Bakery, Chop it and Habaneros, each offering their unique range of specialities.
